The Late Michael O'Meara
The death took place, peacefully, after a short illness on Good Friday March 25th in St. Kieran's Nursing Home, Rathcabbin, of Michael O'Meara, Lisballyard, Rathcabbin. Michael who celebrated his 88th birthday on February 14th last, was a resident of St. Kieran's for the past three years where he was well looked after and where he was content and happy in return.
Born and reared in Lisballyard, as a young man he joined the Irish Army and spent a number of years there stationed in Ballincollig, Co. Cork. He also worked for a number of years in London before returning to his birthplace, buying a farm in Derrylahan and remaining on the land for the rest of his life where he was much respected as a farmer and a good neighbour.
A quiet, gentle natured man, Michael liked the simple things in life and loved nothing more than to join with neighbours and friends for a game of cards and afterwards for a pint in the local. He joined the local GAA club and was a member of the Lorrha Senior team of 1948 that won the North Final and Co. Semi final. Playing in the corner back position against Holycross in the Co. Final, it's recorded that on that day he 'had a great defensive game'. Winning two County medals in hurling, one with Lorrha Juniors and one with their Intermediates, Michael also played with the Army team winning a third with his Batillion and a fourth in the '50s while in London.
His remains were removed to Our Lady Queen of Ireland Church Rathcabbin on Holy Saturday evening and after Funeral Mass there the following day, which was celebrated by Fr. John Donnelly A.P. his remains were laid to rest in Lorrha Cemetery.
Sincere sympathy is extended to his brothers Edward and James (Rathcabbin), sister in-law Moira, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, relatives, neighbours and friends on their loss. May he rest in peace.
