Quinn, Dick

The Late Dick Quinn We laid to rest one of our presidents, Dick Quinn, Butler Avenue and formerly Rossestown. When Rahealty and Thurles Kickhams amalgamated it was fitting that Dick was elected a life-president. In his youth he played with Rahealty, whose training ground was on his father's (Marty, R.I.P.) land at Rossestown. He won Munster and all-Ireland medals with Tipperary. He won a Mid Tipp minor hurling championship with an amalgamated team of Rahealty/Kickhams in 1951 and another in 1952 with Rahealty. At Thurles C.B.S. he played on two Dr Harty Cup winning teams in 1950 and 1951 and also won an all-Ireland colleges medal. He played senior football with Loughmore (under a gentleman's agreement) and won Mid Tipp and county medals in 1955 and a Mid Tipp medals in 1956. With the demise of Rahealty club in the mid '50s Dick joined Thurles Kickhams and played hurling and football with the club until he retired in the late'60s. He played centre-back and full-back in those days. It was a pleasure to play corner-back beside him, because Dick was always in command of the situation. He won a Mid Tipp junior hurling medal in 1960 and Mid Tipp and county No 1 junior hurling in 1962, scoring the winning goal in the county final in the dying minutes, after moving to the forward line with ten minutes to go. He won a Mid Tipp junior football medal in 1956. In those years the club organised a very successful annual social at the Castle Hotel. Dick and his wife Kitty were regulars at these functions and thoroughly enjoyed them. His coffin was draped with the Kickhams and Loughmore colours and the full-back's No 3 green and black jersey of Rahealty Kickhams. The Loughmore and Rahealty Kickhams club provided a guard of honour at the removal of the remains and funeral. It was great to see many of his old comrades present. Peace to his soul. We offer our sincere sympathy to his wife Kitty, his brothers, sisters and relatives. Courtesy of the Tipperary Star 12th March 2005
