The Late Elizabeth (Lizzie) Purcell The parish was saddened on February 2nd when following a brief illness Lizzie Purcell (nee Cantwell) was called to her eternal reward. Since her arrival in Moyne on her marriage to the late Tom Purcell in 1958 she had been involved in almost every charitable and worthy organisation in the parish. In the early years she was enthusiastic member of Muintir na Tire, assisting in the annual agricultural show and representing the build in question time. She shared her late husband Tom's life time devotion to the GAA, particularly the juvenile section and served as secretary for many years. She also represented Moyne-Templetuohy well in the Trath na gCeist section of the Scor competition for over thirty years, winning several Mid finals and one county final in 1995. She was a founding member of the ICA and a valued member of Moyne- Templetuohy History Group who did tremendous work on its behalf. When bridge lessons started in Moyne in 1996, although she had never played cards before, she joined in and persevered and became a popular and respected member of the club. She also shared her daughter's love for Moyne Athletic Club. From 1958 to 1988 she ran a grocery shop, supplying the area with newspapers for most of that period. She was a highly intelligent lady with a great love of reading. In her later years she was part of the Moyne Tidy Village committee which has improved the village and surrounds so much. She was dependable member of the catering committee for any event that took place in the community centre. Besides, all her community work she was a devout Christian a devoted mother and grandmother, a loyal and faithful friend and an exemplary parishioner who spurned the limelight. In her late seventies, she departed this life at St. Joseph's Hospital, Nenagh. The removal was from her residence at Moyne village to St. Mary's Church.A guard of honour comprising members of the GAA, bridge club, ICA and Moyne Tidy Village accompanied the cortege. Principal celebrant at the concelebrated Requiem Mass was Fr. Michael Meagher, A.P., assisted by Fr. Pat Murphy, P.P., Fr Tom Fogarty, President, St Patrick's College, Fr Eugene Everard, Adm., Thurles, Fr Gerard Hennessey, C.C., Thurles, Fr. William Teehan, C.C., Nenagh and Fr. Bernard Costello C.C., London. Following the Mass her remains were laid to rest in Cooleeney Cemetery beside her beloved husband Tom, who died in 1997. The crowds attending removal, Mass and burial testified to the popularity of Lizzie and the Purcell family in the area. Deepest sympathy to her daughters Una (Teehan), Maura (Hughes), Ann (Bookle), Eibhlis and Rosemary, sisters, brothers-in-law, sister-in-law, sons-in-law, grandchildren, nieces, nephews relatives and friends.
