The late Tommy O'Dwyer
Mr Tommy O'Dwyer of 19, Ard Mhuire, Thurles, and originally Glenreigh, Holy Cross, who died on September 9, hailed from a well-known Holy Cross GAA family.
Tommy won a mid Tipperary No 1 Junior Hurling Championship medal and County Tipperary Junior Hurling Championship medal with his native Holycross/Ballycahill in 1941.
His brother, Patrick won a Dr Harty Cup Munster Colleges Senior Hurling Championship medal with Thurles C.B.S. in the late 1930's.
That was in the era of Bishop Michael Russell and the late Dickie ("The Bishop") Ryan, John Delahunty and others.
He was one of the first from Holycross National School to receive a County Council Scholarship for Secondary School Education.
The popularity of Tommy was borne out by the huge attendance at the Removal of the Remains to the Cathedral of the Assumption, Thurles and at interment, following Office and Requiem Mass, in St Patrick's Cemetery, Thurles.
Mass celebrants were: Very Rev James Fogarty, P.P., of Clonoulty/Rossmore, first cousin of deceased; Fr Joe Walsh, Thurles and Fr Kennedy, Littleton.
Tommy was grand gentleman of a quiet and unassuming disposition who lived for his family.
He worked for many years in Erin Foods and Thurles Sugar Factory and also in the Thurles Creamery, where he worked with his wife, Phil.
He enjoyed gardening and games of 25 with his family, and he was a very lucky man at Bingo and was generous with his winnings.
Chief Mourners: Phil, his wife and soul-mate; Jack, Cormackstown; Paddy Thurles and Tommy Junior, Thurles (sons); Mrs Helen Coffey, Six Mile Bridge, Co. Clare and Mrs Marian Donovan, Ballincollig, Cork (daughters) and brother-in-law; sister-in-law; nephews, nieces, grand-children and other relatives and friends. Ar dheis De a anam uasal, cinealta
