The Late Willie Norbert The death occurred at Our Lady of Bethlehem, Cistercian Abbey, Fortglenore, Co. Antrim on Sunday January 26th. Rev. Father Norbert (Willie) Hennessy, formerly of Monour, Galbally, Co. Tipperary. In his late 80's, he was a member of a popular and highly respected farming family and on his death is deeply regretted. Having received his early education at Kilross National school, he attended Rockwell College as a day pupil by cycling to and from his aunts home at Ballinlinan, Golden, a journey of approximately 10 miles each way. His life and work at Portglenone centred around taking charge of the farm belonging to the Cistercian Fathers. He was well known by his attendance at cattle sales and marts on behalf of the Cistercian Order. In his early youth he was an outstanding Gaelic footballer and played football with Galbally (no team in Aherlow) at that time. He played inter-county football with his native county of Tipperary, winning a Munster minor championship in 1935 by which he was awarded a Munster medal. In the same year, Tipperary were beaten by Mayo in the All-Ireland final 1-6 to 1-1 and Willie received a runners up medal on that occasion. Up to a few short years ago, he returned regularly to his family home at Monour from where he renewed acquaintance with his legion of friends who always made him welcome and many tales were retold of his playing career. One of nature's gentlemen he was an outstanding cleric and his contribution to many people who sought his advice during his sacred ministry was legionary and news of his death was deeply regretted. He was buried in the Cistercian burial ground at Portglenone. He is mourned by him many nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends in many parts of Ireland, all of whom will miss his friendship and advice.
