The Late Danny Maher, Leugh, Thurles and formerly Clonimiclan, Gortnahoe - An Appreciation

Danny Maher Leugh, passed away suddenly at his home on 11th Nov 2012 in his 90th year. Beloved husband of the late Eileen Maher (nee Boland) who died on 6th June 2012 and devoted father to his sons and daughters. Danny was a loving and caring grandfather to his ten grandchildren and enjoyed their regular visits. He shared his love of "Irelands Owen" with both his children and grandchildren. Danny was born in Gortnahoe, where he went to the local Primary School in Clonimiclan and spent his earlier years playing on the grounds of Kilcooley Abbey. Even up until recently he still had many enjoyable stories to tell of his childhood in Gortnahoe and Grange. Danny moved back to Leugh with his father and sisters where his uncles and aunt lived and remained there until his death. He was very involved in Leugh, Muintir Na Tire Guild where he was secretary for many years. He really enjoyed the plays and nights out in the local community hall. In 1960, Danny with four other cast members won a certificate of merit in the Tipperary County Drama Festival for their production of the play "Spring". Danny often spoke of Fr. Canon Hayes, founder of Muintir Na Tire and often recalled the trip to Killarney where a Muintir Na Tire conference was been held. He played hurling for Thurles Sarsfields and in 1946 won a county medal. Even when he retired from hurling he loved to listen to matches on the radio and watch them on the telly. Even a few hours before his passing he was watching the Thurles Sarsfields match and was delighted with the result. Danny worked in Thurles Sugar Factory during the campaigns and worked for many years in Thurles Creamary. He was well known for his skill in the building trade and this can still be seen in Thurles and surrounding areas through the many jobs he undertook.

Danny was a devoted family man, kind, intelligent and caring. He loved to see people coming for a chat and enjoyed tracing back over the years. His devotion to the rosary and the "Blessed Mary" could be seen in the nightly rosary he recited with his family and the manner in which he could recite the 'Litany of the Rosary' without pause. Danny was lucky to have good health all his life and was grateful for that. Dan was much loved and respected by his children and grandchildren and will be foremost in their thoughts and prayers.

May Danny enjoy his eternal reward with his wife Eileen, his sisters Lily, Bridie and Cissy and all deceased members of the Maher and Boland families. "May the green sod of Killinan rest lightly on your mortal remains"
