Ryan, Maisie
January 10, 2013The death occurred in the Padre Pio Nursing Home of Maisie Ryan a nonagenarian (nee Hayes, Cormackstown). Deceased was widow of the late Dinny Ryan who predeceased her 36 years earlier. On the death of her husband Maisie continued with the farming until arthritis necessitated her retirement from working the land. She came to live with her sister Annie, husband Denis Walsh and family in Graiguenoe. She involved herself in the parish and in the Abbey where she looked after all the cloths. Despite the distortion of her hands, it was amazing to see her putting the cloth on the Altar using just two fingers, arranging it in a perfect manner as any person with ten healthy fingers could accomplish. Nothing daunted Maisie, she would insist on helping out if ever the occasion arose. As the years passed the Walsh parents had died, the family married with their own homes, Maisie had a choice of nieces homes to stay in where she was lovingly cared for.
Throughout her life her pastime was the game of cards, she was noted as an excellent game of 25 player, she was astute and shrewd, any player who reneged in the game Maisie was quiet capable of taking him or her to task. She also loved the game of Whist. Her nieces assured that she continued her card playing until her final illness ended her game. Keenly interested in hurling and especially
camogie, having her grandniece Una playing in the Co. Tipperary All-Ireland Camogie team was indeed very special for Maisie, even in her advanced years, hail, rain, sunshine or snow Maisie was a definite passenger in the car going to a game or to a training session. She was a spectator at games all over the country. Her last sickness caused the finality to her travel. Kind, generous, gentle, caring and thoughtful Maisie was a person who loved to chat and reminisce. A religious lady who had her priorities always right, she was prayerful and had great faith and belief and trust in the Lord. Peace to her kindly soul. In latter times Maisie needed special nursing care, she came to Padre Pio Nursing Home where she succumbed. Her remains were brought
to the Abbey and after the celebration of requiem mass by Very Rev.Tom Breen, PP., assisted by Fr. Celsus Tierney, Pr. Conor Hayes, Fr. Joe Egan, Fr. Tom Egan, Fr. Tom Fogarty and Fr Jimmy Donnelly, Maisie's remains were laid to rest in the Abbey Graveyard. Chief mourners were her sisters Esther Maher, Nodstown, and Nellie Caesar, Galbertstown, nephews, nieces and many relatives to whom we extend our sympathy. The exceptionally large and representative congregation who attended her Mass and funeral was evident of Maisie's popularity and of the acceptance and regard she was held with by the local community and by all who she came in contact with over her long life.
