Donnelly, Joe

February 07, 2013
Joe Donnelly RIP: We extend our condolences to the family of Joe Donnelly, Loughaun, who died last Friday on his 86th birthday. Joe, one of our Club Presidents, was heavily involved in the club throughout his lifetime.

As a player he was a member of the successful Intermediate hurling team of 1949, playing at corner forward in the north final win and in goal in the county final victory. He also played on the junior football team that won north titles in 1949,1950 and 1951.

Following a number of years in England, Joe returned to his native parish in the 1970s and immediately resumed his involvement in club affairs.

He was an able team selector, and was particularly obliging in his support of the juvenile teams, always being available to transport players to games. He also served as voluntary caretaker of the clubhouse for many years, and always had the centre in top condition for training and matches.

In later years Joe continued to follow the club's teams around the county and it was a familiar sight to see him standing outside the Moneygall dressing room, or close to the trophy presentation following a championship success.

Joe was appointed Life President of the club in 2007. Later that year he was honoured with a Sean Gael Award which was presented to him by Liam Mulvihill, Ard Stiurthoir CLG at the time. It was a fitting tribute to his lifelong commitment and loyal service to the club. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam.
