Worthington, George

May 25, 2012
The death occurred on March 3rd last of George Worthington, Barnane, Templemore. Aged ninety, George died peacefully in St Joseph's Hospital, Nenagh following a very short illness. He was predeceased by his brother John who lived in Australia.
A native of Ballinonty, Killenaule, George came to live in Barnane in 1928 at the age of eight years when his family purchased the dwelling known as 'The Rectory' attached to the local Barnane Castle (Mr Madden was the last Rector to live there).
The Rectory was and is a beautiful house - an ideal location for the Guesthouse which Mrs Worthington Snr ran for many years.
George Worthington (Snr) ran the modern day equivalent of a garden centre, specialising in plants and trees.
He was also an agent for Hibernian Insurance in the locality. When he retired in 1958, his son George took over both enterprises.
He ran a very successful garden business for many years- he was very knowledgeable in this area, his opinions were often sought by garden enthusiasts. Over the years he wound down the nursery and only retired from the Insurance business fifteen years ago, at which time he did some industrial painting in and around the county.
George now began to take life easy pottering around in his beloved garden in a most beautiful part of the country in the shadow of the Devil's Bit mountain.
He loved all sport- he played hurling and football locally in his younger days, and was also a dab hand at Pool, having some trophies displayed on the sideboard for same.
He derived great pleasure from all televised sport and loved to watch and follow soccer, golf and tennis. However, his real passion was horse racing. He had a great understanding of horses and indeed and would be well known in the Bookies for putting on a bet most days. It was also an opportunity for him to meet people and have a chat.
George was married to Thomasina a native of Ballyfin, Co. Laois, a well known nurse (now retired) who worked for many years in The District and then in Hospital of the Assumption in Thurles. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last year.
George will be sadly missed by the many people who knew and enjoyed the pleasure of his company.
Sincere sympathy is extended to his wife Thomasina, brother Bill, nephews Billy and Jonathan, nieces Jean and Ann, sisters-in-law, relatives, neighbours and many friends.
His remains reposed at his residence and were removed for Service to St. Mary's Church Templemore, following which he was interred in Kilfithmore cemetery.
"May his gentle soul rest in peace"
