Tipperary star Lar Corbett has announced his retirement from the intercounty scene.

The Thurles Sarsfields man, aged 30 told manager Declan Ryan of his decision on Monday evening after texting his county team mates on the matter. Work commitments were provided as an explanation.

The 2010 Hurler of the Year intends to play on with his club and following in the footsteps of Benny Dunne is the second Premier star to call it a day in recent months.

Lar had yet to commence intercounty training for 2012 purposes. The Tipp management team have accepted his decision but have left the door open for any returns.

In a statement, Tipperary county board confirmed the news:

"We very much regret that Lar Corbett has told us he is withdrawing from the Tipperary Senior hurling panel due to being unable to give 100% commitment because of business and work pressures.

"Lar's importance and value to the Tipperary hurling team are immeasurable and the door will remain open to him for a return to the panel if his circumstances change".
