Russell, Joe
September 15, 2011Joe was born in Adamstown Templemore in 1934, the fourth of seven children to Jim Russell and Mary (Cis) Fitzpatrick.
After working on the family farm he moved to England where he worked in mining for a short period. He returned to his native Templemore in 1959. He married Bride Quinlan in 1961 where they began their life together in Roscrea, where Joe had gained employment with the P&T (Eircom). The family moved to Borrisbeg, Templemore in 1970.
During his forty years service to the P&T they raised six sons. Bride tragically passed away due to illness at the early age of 57 in 1995.
Joe was an amazing communicator who could interact freely with both young and old. Not only was Joe a supportive brother and friend he was considered an exemplary father who worked dilligently to provide for his family. He was the quick witted uncle with the great turn of phrase and the warm hearted grandfather who freely dispensed hugs and affection when required.
Joe loved his walks in the town park, where his fellow walkers were greeted with a warm smile and a short anecdote. He always had varied interests which included GAA in which he represented College Hill on the Tipperary Junior team in 1955. He also participated in the Tops of The Towns, musicials, theatre, whilst constantly on his travels. Joe was always conscious of keeping himself abreast of local, national and international news events. He was an active member of the local golf club and was President in 2004. He also became involved in the Active Retirement Group and it was here that he met his dear friend Maire who shared so many happy times with Joe up until his tragic passing. Both Máire and Joe travelled the globe and no destination was ever deemed too far.
Joe was raised with a strong faith and priority was given to Sunday mass above all else. His passing was marked by a large attendance at the family home during his wake and again at his removal and funeral mass. The family are forever grateful to Fr Eugene Everard for his beautiful liturgy and to all who officiated and travelled to the funeral mass. A special word of thanks to Maria Ryan and Anne Marie who provided such comforting music during the ceremony. The family would also like to acknowledge the professionalism and understanding of Eamonn Grey during this very difficult time. The large attendance at Joe's funeral is a tribute to the man himself and a great source of comfort to his family.
People leave lasting impressions when they leave this world. Joe will always be remembered as a person who lived life to the full and enjoyed every minute of it. He will be sadly missed by his broken hearted sons, his dearest friend Maire, daughters in law, brothers, sisters, grandchildren and a wide circle of friends.
