The Late Dan Pollard

The death has occurred recently of Dan Pollard, Littleton (1939- 2011), Dan was a native of Littleton and the youngest child of Joe and Alice and a member of a family of two boys and four girls. As a young man he joined the Irish army and was stationed at the Curragh training camp. He met his wife Ann and married while stationed in the Co. Kildare town. Their eldest son, Dan was born there and shortly afterwards the family moved back to Littleton.

Dan served with the U.N. in the Congo in 1960-'61 and did an amount of travelling while in the Defence Forces. He always had a great interest in sport and was a founder member of St. Kevin's Soccer Club. Hurling, however, was his great love and he followed with great passion the local club and the Tipperary County team far and wide with Mags.

He also had a great interest in music and loved to attend the Fleadh Cheoils and enjoyed the camaraderie there and the pint of Guinness. Since his passing many great stories of Dan were recalled. He worked with North Tipperary Council until his retirement. In recent years he was diagnosed with Motor Neuron and Parkinson's diseases and fought a brave battle all through his illness. He loved his family and was a brilliant man with them and always looked after their welfare.

He is survived by his wife Ann, son Joe, daughters Alice and Mags, daughter-in-law, grandchildren and great grand children to whom sympathy is extended. The large attendance at the wake, at the church ceremony and burial was a tribute to his personality. Dan was a legend in his own right and his nickname "Ghandi", which means a wise man, was appropriate to his life. Dan Pollard will not be forgotten. R.I.P.
