Kelly, Michael

July 09, 2009
The recent death of Michael Kelly, Lacka, Doon after brief illness, removed a well known and highly respected member of the rural and farming community. Mike, as he was popularly known to his family, friends and neighbours, was quietly spoken, yet full of genuine friendship and welcome, where ever you met him. Throughout his life Mike Kelly was a proud member of that part of Don parish community, that live across the county border in Tipperary, and who over the ages have remained proud determined Tipperary people, particularly in sport under the revered banner of Glengar GAA club. Mike Kelly in his youth, was a student of Irish culture, especially Irish music and dance, and proud that his family home always had its door open to the freedom fighters of Ireland during troubled times. He loved Irish music and had a keen interest in local history and the folklore of his locality. Also he enjoyed our native games and all sport. In his youth Mike Kelly competed in a number of athletic events including road running and could have made an impact in middle distance athletic events had he taken the sport seriously. He spent most of his life dedicated to farming the family holding in Croughmorka from which he retired some years ago, and went to live in Lacka. Mike enjoyed a chat over an occasional drink with friends and acquaintances. He was a man who loved rural life and the challenges farming posed over the decades, as well as the independence and quality of life it provided. Most of all he enjoyed recalling happy events of yesterday with his friends and family in his home, including the local fairs where farmers sold and purchased livestock and produce. The immense gathering of people for his wake, removal, requiem mass and burial, bore testimony of the high respect in which he and his widow Teresa and family are held over a wide region of the country. No more in his life will we have the pleasure of his company as he enjoys the bliss of heaven in the presence of his company as he enjoys the bliss of heaven in the presence of his Creator. His mortal remains rest in Doon Cemetery among those who have predeceased him to wait for Resurrection Day. As we pass his final resting place beneath the shadow of the Sliabh Phelim hills, we will remember him with a prayer and in our thoughts. Deepest sympathy on his death is extended to his widow Teresa, and family James, John and Nora, grandchildren Christy, Tracey and Michael, son in law Jack and extended family.
