Carroll, Denis
June 14, 2008
When news filtered through the parish and surrounding areas on Sunday 2nd of the death of Denis, due to a tragic accident, it was greeted with shock and heartfelt sympathy. 20 year old Denis was full of the joys of life. He was kind-hearted, generous, sincere, caring and wore his heart on his sleeve. Over the last few days we have reflected on Denis' perfect lifestyle, everybody loved Denis (except a corner forward), and his family can gain comfort that he was loved and respected by all who had the privilage of knowing him. Such was his popularity among the ladies that he was a regular guest at St. Mary's, Nenagh graduation dances.
Denis gave one hundred percent to all ventures, his sport, studies, farming, faith and family. Denis won North Football titles at U12, 14, 16 (which he captained), minor and U21 grades. He won a North Junior medal in 2005. He was also Burgess' young player of the year in 2006. He won a Munster colleges medal with Nenagh C.B.S. in 2003 and went on to wear the green of L.I.T.. Hurling was Denis' first love and just twenty four hours before his calling to heaven, Denis donned the no.2 jersey for Burgess in the Junior A semi-final. Denis was very committed to his club, never missed a training session always willing to take on board advice - he was a mentors dream. He was not able to say no to any request, so the role of linesman or umpire was often bestowed on him at games in Kilcolman.
He was an avid supporter of the county team and was eagerly looking forward to the start of the championship. He was an all-round sportsman, supporting Aston Villa in the soccer, and Munster's achievements were thouroughly enjoyed by him. He also enjoyed a game of poker with the lads.
Denis was a second year student in L.I.T. and excelled at his studies. Above everything else, Denis was devoted to his family and faith, an exemplary son, brother, grandson, nephew and cousin.
A graveside oration was given by his fellow inter county clubman Shane Maher in Tyrone cemetery on Wednesday last as Denis was laid to rest.
His gentle smile will never be forgotten, he will be missed.
A dheis De go raibh a anam dilis.
From his great friends in Burgess GAA Club.
