On Thursday, July 24th former player and selector of Solohead G.A.A. Club the late Philly Quinlan of Barronstown was laid to rest in St. Michael's Cemetery, Tipperary. As a player he displayed all the skills necessary to be successful at both codes winning West and County titles in a career stretching from a schools hurling title in 1946 to capturing the 1959 County Junior hurling championship defeating Coolymyne in the Co. Final by 4-7 to 2-4. In 1952 he won the West Minor Hurling and football titles and followed up with West Junior football championship in 1954 and 1955. He was a member of the solohead 1956/57 West Senior Football Championship winning squad and lined out at centre back on the St. Nicholas combo of Glengar, Cappawhite and solohead who won the West Senior football Championship winning squad and lined out at centre back on the St.Nicholas combo of Glengar, Cappawhite and Solohead who won the West Senior Hurling Championship in 1957. Further hurling honours came his way in 1955 and 1959 winning West Junior Hurling titles and crowned a great career in 1959 with a Co.Junior Hurling title defeating Burgess after two replays in the Co. semi-final before seeing off Coolmyne (South Tipp) by nine points in the Co.Final. As a team mentor and when transport was scarce Philly always made his car available carrying players to games around the division and beyond in the call of duty to his beloved solohead G.A.A. club.
