FL2: Lilywhites given late Tipp fright … but survive

Kildare's Fergal Conway pulls the trigger

Kildare remain in the promotion chase after holding on for a narrow 1-11 to 2-7 victory over Tipperary at Newbridge.

Fergal Conway’s 34th-minute goal had Cian O’Neill’s men – who have warded off any possibility of relegation – of a commanding 1-7 to 0-2 half time lead and the hosts looked utterly dominant with less than 15 minutes left as they still led by seven points, 1-9 to 0-5.

But goals in the last ten minutes from Liam Boland and Dan O’Meara dramatically brought the Premier County back on terms in injury time – 2-6 to 1-9. Boland netted in the 61st minute after Michael Quinlivan's initial effort was saved and O'Meara fired under Mark Donnellan before Brian Fox tied the scores up in the first minute of additional time.

However, a stunning 73rd-minute point into the wind from substitute Adam Tyrrell and a fifth Neil Flynn score (‘45’) got the Lilywhites out of jail as they moved up to seven points on the table with one match remaining (away on Donegal next weekend). Kildare are one point behind Meath, who have a game in hand, Donegal and Fermanagh.

Tipp remain in the relegation quagmire as themselves and Munster rivals Cork and Clare each have three points.
