Drumcliffe Rosses Point club notes

September 04, 2018

Last Sunday was a very special occasion for U14 club footballer Rianne Smith who represented her club and county in the Cumann na mBunscol exhibition games during the All-Ireland senior and minor football finals. She scored 1-1 in her match, wearing Tyrone colours. We wonder how her Mum (a proud Down woman) feels about that!

Congrats to our All-Ireland final ticket draw winners last week who were: Jimmy Currid (Carney), Brian Monaghan, Phil Gallagher (Snr) & Damien Kerrigan.

Our ladies intermediate footballers collected their first championship win at Oxfield last Sunday morning when they recorded a comprehensive 3-13 to 2-5 victory over Owenmore Gaels. They play their next round-robin match this Sunday morning (Sept 9th) against Calry/St Joseph's in Hazelwood at 10 O'Clock. Last Sunday's team was: Rachel Quigley, Orlaith Furey (Capt), Aimee Oates, Avril Clancy, Lisa Mcloughlin, Michelle McNamara, Kate Keyes, Sinead Regan (0-2), Jayne McCormack, Molly Brady (0-2), Amanda Healy (2-2), Laura Oates (1-3), Róisín Healy (0-3), Tracy O'Boyle, Megan Brady (0-1). Subs; Shirley Nicholson, Zara Mulrooney, Grace Casserley, Aishling O'Reilly.

Our senior footballers will face the losers of the championship relegation semi-final between Eastern Harps and St John's, who meet this weekend. This relegation 'final' will determine our championship status (senior or intermediate) for 2019.

If you're in front of the telly next Thursday evening, switch over to TG4 at 9:30pm for the new series of 'The Underdogs' GAA programme. Ten years on from the last series, the search is on for a brand new team of footballing hopefuls - and it will feature a DRP club man - our own Niall Canning. The craic should be good. Hope there isn't an auction!

Well done to Benbulben Gaels U14 hurlers who recorded a two-point victory (6-4 to 4-8) over Tourlestrane in the championship last Sunday. They now face Naomh Eoin this Friday evening in Oxfield at 7pm.

The U16 hurlers play Easkey/St Farnan's on Wednesday evening in the championship at Oxfield. Throw-in: 6:30pm.

Our girls U16 footballers suffered their first defeat in the championship against Calry/St Joseph's during the week. Their next match is a home one against Eoghan Rua.

Our boys U16 footballers will play their deferred 'A' championship semi-final against Ballymote/Bunninadden next Monday, September  10th, in Scarden at 6:30pm.

The U14 boys footballers made it three wins out of three in the 'B' championship with a 4-12 to 2-5 success against Tourlestrane last Monday, while the girls U14s team played the same opposition (away) and were unlucky to lose out narrowly on a final scoreline of 5-8 to 4-9. They are, however, still in contention for a play-off spot.

Our girls U8 and U10 nursery footballers had a very enjoyable series of fun games in Kent Park last Saturday morning. Our sincere thanks to all at St Mary's GAA Club for hosting us. Nursery coaching continues in Oxfield this Saturday at the usual times.

The U9 and U11 urban leagues begin this Wednesday, September 5th at 6:45pm. Our first games are against St John's in Cuilbeg Carraroe. Players are asked to assemble there by 6:30pm. Don't forget the gum shields. For more info, contact Alan O'Dowd on 0879854017.

There's still time to buy a ticket for our new Club Lotto. The first draw is scheduled to take place on Saturday September 22nd. Priced at €50, our Lotto tickets give you entry for 11 monthly draws with a possible jackpot of €5000 available to the winner. This is an invaluable fundraiser for the club - and your support would be appreciated. Tickets are available from any club officer.

Save the date: A great night's entertainment is coming your way. The club's Boston Tea Party will take place on the October bank holiday weekend (Sunday October 28th) in the Radisson Blu hotel. More details soon.
