The late Pat Dockry The death has occurred in Cork of former Sligo footballer, Pat Dockry. A native of Ballymote, the late Mr Dockry, who was fifty-five years of age and married with four children, was an outstanding player with his local club and played at all levels with for Sligo. He was one of the most prominent players on the senior county team in the late 1980s and early 1990s, playing in a variety of roles, most regularly at full back, centre-half, midfield or centre-forward. As well as possessing great talent as a footballer, he was also an inspirational leader on the field and captained the Sligo team on many occasions during his playing career, including the 1989 Connacht Championship game against Leitrim at Corran Park, Ballymote. At club level, the late Mr Dockry was keenly interested in other sports. He was a noted boxer during his time at University College Dublin, winning the British and Irish championship in 1983. He was also a noted handballer and was a prominent member of Ballymote Celtic football club, a team formed by his late father, Padraic, who also played Gaelic football for Sligo in the 1950s. He was a keen rugby player as well. The late Mr Dockry worked with NCF in Sligo before moving to a new job in Cork. His death occurred at his home in Mallow after an illness borne with great courage and dignity. A large number of people, representative of a range of sporting organisations and the wider community travelled from Ballymote to Mr Dockry's funeral in Mallow. The late Mr Dockry is survived by his mother, Nuala, wife Fong, and children, Hurl, Ellis, Luke and Liam, brothers Jim, Sean and Hugh, and sisters Louise and Nuala. The requiem Mass took place in St Mary's Church, Mallow with the funeral afterwards to St Gobnait's Cemetery. Courtesy of the Sligo Champion 4 May 2007
