In a close and exciting contest at a breezy but dry Kilcoyne Park, Tubbercurry came away with the two league points in this South Sligo derby. The home side got off to a perfect start with Stephen Kilcoyne (2), Fergal McDonagh (2) and a long range effort from Barry Kilcoyne (1) saw them race into a lead with the aid of the breeze in the opening 15 minutes.
Mullinabreena were dealt a major blow when reduced to 14 men mid-way through the 1st half. They gradually gained a foothold in the game around the middle of the park and reduced the deficit to 4 points by the 20th minute with a fine score from Shane O'Brien. Tubbercurry added further scores before the break from Gary Curran (2), Cian Killoran (1) and Fergal McDonagh (1) to leave the half time score 0.09 to 0.01 to the home side. In the second half Mullinabreena came more into the game with assistance of the breeze.
Barry Kivelhan, John McGowan (1) and Shane O'Brien led the revival, with the latter hitting 3 good scores to bring the visitors right back into contention. Tubbercurry were reduced to 13 men mid-way through the 2nd half. The home side regrouped somewhat with scores from Jason Mathews and Gary Curran. Mullinabreena rallied and reduced the deficit to 2 points with a well taken goal and an inspirational score from full back Sean Gorman with 5 minutes remaining. Mark Burke, Conor Evans and James Kelly were rock solid in defence and were key to the home side holding out in the end to record a two point victory.
