The Sligo County Board has sought financial aid from Croke Park
The Sligo County Board are in debt to the tune of €1.5 million.

County Board treasurer Joe Queenan admitted to the Sligo Champion that their finances had never been in such a state before.

One of the biggest expenses last year was funding for county teams, which cost in the region of €400,000 and this is one area that will be cut back.

Chartered Accountants were brought in to audit the books and the figures presented to the county board make for stark reading.

"It's the most difficult situation we've ever faced," said Queenan. Players and clubs will be protected, but we're looking at cutting our costs in every other area."

However, despite the financial setback, the county board will press ahead with the first phase of their centre of excellence at Scarden.
