New SFC format will suit stronger teams, says Breheny

Tommy Breheny believes the new Sligo SFC format will suit clubs with the strongest squads.

Writing in his Sligo Champion column, the former Yeats County manager said: "The team that will win Owen B (Hunt) in 2013 could be the side that has the best strength in depth as games will be coming thick and fast with very little time between games for players to recover from injury, or if a player gets sent off in their first game with a direct red card their championship could be over.

"How the new format works is that the group winners are straight through to a quarter-final with the second placed team in group A playing the third placed team in group B and vice-versa with the same applying to groups C and D for a place in the quarter-finals, with the losers going into the relegation playoffs.

"With the championship not due to start until August, there is plenty of time yet for teams to get the work done as early season form will count for nothing once the championship starts."
