McGloin, Séan

Tributes have been paid to former Sligo County Councillor Séan McGloin who gave an outstanding life-long contribution to the Gaelic Athletic Association and Comhaltas Ceoltori Eireann.
The late Mr. McGloin (76) of Knocknarea was Uachtaran of the Coolera-Strandhill GAA club and was an officer of the Sligo branch of Comhaltas.
At the County Sligo Fleadh Cheoil in Strandhill last year Séan was presented with a special award by the Director of Comhaltas, Senator Labhras O'Murchu, to honour his lifetime involvement with Comhaltas and at the recent Annual General Meeting of the Sligo branch of Comhaltas he was re-elected to the post of Treasurer.
Séan featured in the forwards during his playing days for Coolera in the 1950s and was known as the 'Tony Tighe' ( the prominent Cavan Footballer) of the team.
He retired from playing at a young age to take the administration route, and he held a number of position with his club. He was Treasurer in the 1960's and Chairman in 1988 and held the post of President for a number of years.
He had the distinction of being on the Coolera Senior Scór quiz team which won an All-Ireland title in Limerick together with Eamonn Mullen and Michéal Harte in 1977. Carmel Gunning also won an All-Ireland for the club on the same night. The team had to come through a sudden death play-off with Eastern Harps to claim the Sligo title and then won out in Connacht. They won the All-Ireland on the last question.
Séan McGloin was also an officer of the Ransboro Development Association and was active in the Association up to the time of his death. He also supported the local Feisenna.
He was co-opted as an Independent meeting to Sligo County Council at its meeting on December 9th 1968, to replace another Independent Clr. William Carter. For the years up to 1974 he particularly championed the cause of the farming community in county Sligo.
Séan was a diary farmer all his life and was one of a number of local farmers who worked to start Sligo Dairies in the late 1960s and early 1970's. He was also prominent in the I.F.A.
At the January monthly meeting in Sligo Borough Council, members extended their sympathy to the McGloin family and adjourned for a short time as a mark of respect.
Councillor Declan Bree proposed the vote of sympathy and the adjournment and said he was one of those who had the privilege of knowing and working with Séan McGloin through his involvement with Comhaltas Ceoiltori Eireann.
"Sean was gentle,soft spoken and kind and he always saw the best in people," Clr. Bree said.
He added that Séan McGloin was highly respected by all who knew him and he and his late wife, Mary, gave unselfishly of their time in support of so many worthy causes and never sought acknowledgement.
The Mayor, Councillor Rosaleen O'Grady, said Séan McGloin had represented everything that was good about a local community and had worked tirelessly for the betterment of his own area. he had also been a tremendous servant to the GAA and Comhaltas and Clr. O'Grady recalled getting lifts to the finals of GAA Scór competitions with him.
Other Councillors associated themselves with the remarks.
Mr McGloin died peacefully at Sligo General Hospital on January 22nd. He is survived by daughters Maria and Anne Devaney; sons, Kevin and Fergus; son-in-law Padraig, sisters Eileen, Brid, Patricia, Agnes, Anne and Margaret; brothers-in-law; grandchildren, relatives, neighbours and many many friends.
Removal took place from the family home to Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, Ransboro, for Mass of the Resurrection and burial followed in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Scarden, Strandhill Road.
Members of the Coolera-Strandhill GAA club and representatives of Comhaltas Ceoiltoiri Eireann formed a guard of honour at the removal from Feehily's Funeral Home to his home and member of the GAA club provided a guard of honour from his home to the Church prior to Mass.
