http://stmarys.sligo.gaa.ie/ Relay Run to Croke Park for All Ireland Final 2010
On the 17th of September 2010 we are planning an historic relay run from Kent Park to Croke Park to raise funds to support the various Club teams - the first time this has been done. People will run in pairs and each pair will run approximately 12 miles spread over two legs. Our plan is to start at Kent Park at 7pm on the evening of the 17th of September and we hope to reach Croke Park early the following afternoon - in plenty of time to relax and enjoy the evening prior to the All Ireland Final. All Club members will be given sponsorship cards over the summer to assist the runners raise the funds. So if you have a connection with the club and are already a runner you are more than welcome to get involved. More importantly if you are not a runner, want to get fit but need something to motivate you, the same applies. Finally if you are just looking for a slower but more cost effective way of getting to Dublin for the All Ireland, this is for you too. Anyone interested contact David Keane on 086 8367005 or Niall Murray on 087 2860239. Please note that places on the run are limited and are filling up fast. So don't delay, get in touch and dust off the runners.
Saturday Morning Coaching: Last Saturday there was a smaller than usual turnout due to the Cumann na mBunscoil Finals and a blitz that were taking place elsewhere. Nevertheless there were up to 40 kids ranging from 5 years to 12 years present. Thanks to all the coaches who helped out including some members of the Club Senior Team. Remember to get your registration forms completed and handed in as soon as possible.
Cumann na mBunscoil
Congratulations to the boys in Scoil Ursula who won the boys title for the first time ever.
Many of the team play with our U-12 and U-14 sides. Their girls team narrowly missed out in the final. Gaelscoil Chnoc na Ré won the girls final and many of the girls play with our ladies team
Well done to the teachers concerned and the future is bright for both school teams as well as St. John's who missed on a final place for the first time in many years.
U-14: The U-14 side were due to play Curry away in the quarter final of the 'A' Championship on Monday evening last. See next week's notes for more information.
Paddy Clifford Cup: The 3rd Clifford Cup blitz for U12 took place on June 5th, this was a very enjoyable day for all concerned and thanks to our sponsors and to all who helped out on the day. Castlebar Mitchells were the eventual winners.
U-12: It has been a busy couple of weeks for our U-12 boys. The development squad had 2 good wins on Tuesday and Thursday before the Bank Holiday versus Tubbercurry and St. Molaise Gaels with all players playing at least three quarters of each game. That saw them through to a quarter final against Geevagh on the Bank Holiday Monday. Our older Under 12 team also finished off their league campaign with games against Tubbercurry and St. Molaise Gaels. They came off second best in both encounters and as a result qualified for the quarterfinal on 8th June against Calry. But before that some of both squads played in the U-12 Paddy Clifford Blitz on Saturday of the bank holiday weekend. Geevagh have just one team in the league and our development squad put up a great show against them in a thrilling match where they were just one point behind in the last few minutes, after which Geevagh pulled away to win by four. Our man of the match was Kevin Connell playing in the half-back line and he just seemed to be in the right place all through the game reading the game well. Not far behind was Ewan Heapes who has just starting playing Gaelic this year and is one to watch for the future. The rest of the squad was Adam Lynch, Tom Gavin, Fionn Costello (captain), Donal Fidgeon, Adam Harrigan, Michael Kilcoyne, Aaron Rooney, Ryan Hargadon, Ryan Gray, Eoin Morahan, Niall Feehily, Simon Gaffney and Thomas Maher. The older squad's quarter final proved to be one of our best displays all season which was rewarded with a well deserved win. Man of the match on the day was Jake Hargadon followed very closely by his twin Nathan. All of the team on the day produced excellent performances and it was pleasing to see the hard work on the training ground paying off. Details of the semi-final are not available yet and will be forwarded to the team as soon as they are known.
U-10: The U-10 League Celebrations Day took place in Monsignor Hynes Park, Grange, last Saturday. Our two U-10 teams took part and both won their games in very enjoyable surroundings. Padraig O'Malley's Team was Ruth Monaghan, Ben Symth, Donal Keaveny, Darragh Feehily, Hubert Gilvarry, Scott Lynch, Sean Casey, Daire Muldowney, Michael Munnelly, Daire Cawley and Diarmuid O'Malley. Adrian Flynn's Team was Patrick Maher, Fergal O'Kelly-Lynch, Liam O'Kelly-Lynch, Darragh Cawley, Juan Lyons, Aidan Campbell, Luke Walsh, Anthony Maher, Eamon Flynn, Andrea Flynn, Aiobhinn Darcy and Ali Dykes. Missing on the day were Niall Campbell, Ruaidhri Mullingan, Cian McGuiness, Tom Ryan, Leon Gillen and Ethane Couch. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the parents who helped out with lifts to matches during the year. Also would like to thank all the under 10 squad for there commitment throughout the year. Over the last couple of weeks their performance at every match has improved and just goes to show that the training is paying off. Thanks also to the coaches.
We are organising a trip to Galway on Sunday 27th June to play Salthill in a blitz, our Under 10 team and are girls under 12 team are invited to take part, please ring Joe Campbell on 086 8381270 if you are interested. If we have enough numbers we will hire a bus for the Day.
Membership: Football membership for all Senior players is now overdue and is priced at €60 for adults and €40 for students/unemployed. Club membership is now due for all and is priced at €20 for general club membership and can be paid at the clubhouse.
Senior/Junior: The Seniors played out a draw away to Drumcliffe/Rosses Point on Saturday evening last at Oxfield. The team went into the game off the back of some good form and it was the visitors that opened the scoring with a point from Donnacha Gallagher. The home side took the lead with a brace of points and could have extended their lead but for some wayward shooting. Coming up to half time, further scores from Mary's from Gallagher and Johnny Martyn left the visitors in the ascendency at the break on a scoreline of St. Mary's 0-5 Drumcliffe/Rosses Point 0-4. Mary's extended the lead to two points immediately on the restart with a score from Gallagher, but the home side, dominating around the middle and on the breaks, tagged on four scores in a row to go into the lead. Mary's rallied in the closing minutes and scores from Johnny Martyn and Mark Butler snatched a draw for the visitors. In what was a scrappy match with many unforced errors, the best performers for St. Mary's were Brian Collery in goals and Caolan 'Kiki' O'Grady and Ronan Carter in defence. Final score St. Mary's 0-10 Drumcliffe/Rosses Point 0-10. The Seniors face Tubbercurry in Kent Park on Saturday evening next (Throw-in 7.30pm). We ask supporters to come out and get behind the team. Training continues this week with all Senior and Junior Panellists expected to attend. The Junior team recorded their first win of the Division 5 League campaign with a hard fought win over St. Pat's at Kent Park on Sunday afternoon last. With Ciaran O'Boyle and the returning Simon Gillespie driving the team on from midfield, and Shane Breheny notching some important scores upfront, Mary's led by the minimum at half time. The home side continued to press forward during the second period and recovered from the concession of a penalty midway through the half as points from Breheny, Glen Monaghan, Declan Cawley and a goal from O'Boyle sealed the win on a scoreline of St. Mary's 1-11 St. Pat's 2-4. There were good performances from Ciaran Keaveney, Kealan Marshall, Kyle Kane, Tomás Carroll, James Fox, Micháel O'Broin and substitutes Cian McKeon, Blain Gaffney and Gavin Cawley. The Juniors are due to face Bunnanadden away this Friday evening (Throw-in 8.00pm).
County Scene: We congratulate Kevin Walsh and the Sligo Team including Club Players, Mark Breheny, Johnny Davey and Stephen Coen on their defeat of Mayo in the Connacht Championship. We wish them well versus Galway on June 27th
