Connacht club SFC: Heneghan inspires Castlerea win
October 19, 2009
Nine points, including six frees, from the boot of Ger Heneghan steered Castlerea/St. Kevin's to a comfortable victory over Tourlestrane in the opening round of the AIB Connacht club football championship at Markievicz Park.
Castlerea/St. Kevin's (Roscommon).1-12
Tourlestrane (Sligo)1-6
Gerry McGowan gave the home side a dream start when he pounced for a fortuitous goal in the fifth minute. But Castlerea settled to their task after Heneghan opened their account in the seventh minute.
In the final 10 minutes of the first half, Castlerea bagged 1-4, while keeping their opponents scoreless, with the goal coming from former Roscommon star Nigel Dineen in stoppage time.
Leading by 1-7 to 1-3 at the break, Castlerea saw their lead reduced to 1-7 to 1-5 on the restart. But with Heneghan in unerring form, the visitors tagged on a further five points to set up a semi-final date with the Mayo champions (either Knockmore or Charlestown) on November 8.
