Henry, Michael

The late Michael Henry Last weekend was one of the most important for the Eastern Harps club for many, many seasons as they contested two major championship semi-finals. The Senior team played Curry on Saturday at Markievicz Park also the venue for the intermediate semi-final against St Molaise Gaels on Sunday. As they did so, all connected with the East Division outfit mourned the death of one of the club's most dedicated and steadfast supporters, the late Michael Henry, Carrowcrory, who was tragically killed in a car crash near his home. "Michael would certainly have been in attendance. He never missed a match and especially liked the big championship occasion," said Eastern Harps Chairman, Sean Gallagher. Mr Henry, who was in his 70s died in Sligo General Hospital, two days after the collision. He was returning home about 11.30pm on Thursday night week last from a shop at The Traveller's Rest, about a quarter of a mile from his home. As he did so his vehicle was in collision with another, in which there were three people, travelling in the opposite direction. Mr Henry who lived alone, was a Pioneer and a farmer all his life and rarely, if ever missed a Harps match, home or away. He would also drive to the pitch to watch training sessions. He loved the GAA and the players involved. In earlier years, he liked a kickabout with the young lads of Keash at the local football field. Michael underpinned his unstinting support for the club and its various teams by carrying out a lot of voluntary work, particularly when a new pitch was being developed a number of years ago. If a group of volunteers were working at weekends and in the evenings, he was among them, always helping out. While Michael's great interest was gaelic games, he was also known as a good card player. "He was certainly a great Eastern Harps man and he will be missed," said the Chairman. Michael's brother Pat, is Vice-Chairman of the club and sympathy is extended to him and to his nephews, nieces, family and many friends. Michael's remains were removed on Tuesday of last week from his home to St Kevin's Church, Keash. His funeral took place to Templevaney Cemetery on Wednesday. - Sligo Champion, 17th September 2008
