Sligo manager Paul Taylor admits to being surprised by the appointment of Armagh native Padraig Hughes for last weekend’s NFL 3 clash against Down.

The Mourne County rallied late on to claim the victory and although Taylor felt his team should have held on, he queried why a referee from a neighbouring county (to Down) would be appointed.

“We had momentum at times when he pulled the game back,” Taylor told the Sligo Champion. “He’s supposed to be a Division 1 referee and he’s an Armagh referee, which I didn’t make any comment on before the game. But it’s a bit close to home for Down. I’m disappointed with that.

“He’s going to know their players. But it’s not just that the standard of refereeing was shocking. I’ll be honest and I don’t want to be giving out about referees but it’s not just about where he is from, the standard was terrible.

“That bit of luck sometimes goes your way and I genuinely would have to question a lot of the referee’s decisions.”
