St. Brigid's win again in Roscommon
October 09, 2006
St. Brigid's withstood a late rally from challengers St. Faithleach's to retain their Roscommon SFC crown in a scrappy encounter at Hyde Park.
St. Brigid's……1-7
St. Faithleach's..1-5
The outcome largely boiled down to a goalkeeping error by former county goalkeeper Derek Thompson just 15 seconds into the second half. Thompson allowed a long-range free from St. Brigid's Frankie Dolan to drop from his hands and Dolan's brother Garvan was on hand to force the ball over the goal-line.
That score put the Kiltoom side, who last put county titles back-to-back in 1958 and '59, 1-4 to 0-3 ahead, but they had to endure some anxious moments as St. Faithleach's fought back in the closing stages.
With six minutes to go, Garvan Dolan was about to be substituted when he was shown a straight red card.
By then, St. Faithleach's were back in contention thanks to a 49th minute penalty from Enda Kenny.
Brendan O'Brien responded with a point for the championship, but Henry Kenny brought the gap back to a point after 58 minutes. St. Brigid's were subsequently subjected to some intense pressure, but with time almost up, Frankie Dolan scored the insurance point from a sideline kick.
