Finnegan, Sean

The Late Sean Finnegan The community of Athleague and further afield are mourning the sudden and untimely death of Sean Finnegan (55), who passed away. A much liked individual, Sean was a very popular figure in his community and was very much associated with the GAA. His death has been met with great shock and disbelief. A native of Easterfield, Athleague, the deceased was educated at Hollygrove National School and Roscommon CBS. He took up employment with Casey's Garage over 30 years ago where he worked in the administrative section before becoming Service Manager three years ago. A lover of sports, especially hurling, the late Sean Finnegan was a member of the Athleague Hurling Club and in his younger days he won county underage titles with Athleague before going on to become manager of the senior team. Treasurer of the Athleague Hurling Club, Sean took up the position of the Roscommon County Hurling Board Treasurer in 2001. He was also involved in the fundraising for the new development at Athleague hurling pitch which was completed recently. A very obliging individual, Sean was known to be a very good family man. Indeed it was a testament to the high esteem in which he was held in his community with many, many people travelling from near and far to the removal from Smyth's Funeral Home to Athleague Church. Mass of the Resurrection in St. Patrick's Church in Athleague was celebrated by Rev. Fr. John Leogue P.P. Athleague, and was followed by burial in Athleague cemetery. He is much missed by his wife Marie, son Patrick, daughter Louise, brother Michael, sister Marie Scanlon, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends. Mr Finnegan was predeceased by his parents Paddy and Dolly. Mr Johnny Haughey, a life-long friend of Sean's delivered a fitting tribute at the graveside. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dilis.
