Former Galway hurling star Anthony Cunningham has been appointed manager of county football champions St. Brigid's for the coming season. Cunningham, who managed the Roscommon hurlers in recent years and was in charge of the St. Brigid's under 21 team which won the county title before Christmas, will have John O'Mahony alongside him in an advisory capacity. He succeeds Ger Dowd, who stepped down after Brigid's lost the recent Connacht club final to Salthill/Knocknacarra. "It's going to be difficult to have a good year again, but that would be the big aim - to try and retain the title at senior level and obviously to do as well in the other grades," said Cunningham, who served as a selector with the Brigid's senior team three years ago. "Champions are there to be knocked and it's going to be very difficult to retain, but that's the measure of how good the team is. It's difficult to win any championship but to retain it is a taller task. "It's going to be a difficult job but I'm looking forward to the challenge. It's a good team that wins one championship, but it's a great team that puts two back-to-back." Tweet
