BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON CAREER: My father WAYS OF IMPROVING THE GAME: More emphasis on skill DISLIKES ABOUT THE GAA: Referee decisions BEST GAME SEEN: Four Roads winning the Connacht Club Final in 1988 HOPES FOR 1993: To win that All-Ireland medal WE ARE TOLD YOU ARE ALSO QUITE A USEFUL FOOTBALLER: I have played football from Under 14 upwards and have won titles in nearly every grade. My greatest honour was representing my county at Minor level in 1990 and 1991 TOM GREHAN, THE ROSCOMMON COUNTY PLAYER, IS FROM THE SAME ST. AIDANS CLUB: Yes, Tommy is a club mate of mine and is a member of the Roscommon panel for the last number of years and has maintained his place at left half forward on the team ANY OTHER PAST OR PRESENT COUNTY PLAYERS FROM YOUR CLUB: In the county hurling team there are quite a few on the panel - Michael and John Cunniffe, Damien Lohan, Declan Coyle, Frank Carty, Paul Dolan and Paddy Dolan to name but a few TELL US ABOUT THE HURLING SIDE OF THINGS IN FOUR ROADS: There is along tradition of hurling in Four Roads. The club is in existence for a long time and has won the senior championship the most amount of times. The club has a good standard of hurling at every grade from under 12 upwards and is well capable of fielding teams at every age group with younger and more skilful players AND THE FOOTBALL CLUB, ST. AIDANS? St. Aidan's is the football team in the same parish as Four Roads. The club was promoted into the senior championship three years ago. They have won titles in every grade. Players from the club have represented the county at every grade HOW STRONG IS HURLING IN ROSCOMMON: There are seven clubs in Roscommon and all the hurling is played in the south of the county. The standard is high and clubs have represented themselves well in Connacht OBVIOUSLY THERE HAS TO BE A BIG INFLUENCE FROM NEIGHBOURING GALWAY - A MORE TRADITIONAL HURLING COUNTY: No. There hasn't been a big influence from Galway. Roscommon has a tradition of it's own. They hurling may not be as god, but no club team can be faulted for it's competitiveness. Club teams have represented themselves well in the Connacht club finals. The last was Four Roads winning in 1988 ROSCOMMON HURLING TEAM MANAGER, FRANK CARTY - WE HAVE HEARD GOOD THINGS ABOUT YOUR FELLOW FOUR ROADS CLUBMATE: Frank is a club mate of mine and is a very experienced man for county team manager. As well as playing for Roscommon, he has played with Connacht and won a Railway Cup medal with them. Frank's experience and leadership qualities should be enough for Roscommon to win that All-Ireland B Championship ALTHOUGH YOU HAVE PLAYED MINOR FOOTBALL WITH ROSCOMMON, YOU HAVE YET TO BOOK A PLACE WITH THE COUNTY UNDER 21S: Since the minor I have concentrated on the hurling but I intend to fight for my place on next year's panel YOUR FATHER IS VERY INVOLVED IN POLITICS: Yes, he is - locally since 1979 and nationally since 1989 YOUR FAMILY HAVE CLOSE CONNECTIONS WITH ANOTHER ROSCOMMON POLITICIAN, ALBERT REYNOLDS: Yes, we are like one big happy family here in Roscommon ROSCOMMON, IN THE LAST TEN YEARS, HAVE MADE GOOD STRIDES IN THE HURLING WORLD. BUT DO YOU FIND THE FOOTBALLERS CONTINUALLY GRABBING THE HEADLINES: Roscommon has more of a tradition of football in the county, so naturally the local media give a better coverage of football in the county ARE THE HURLERS WELL TREATED BY THE ROSCOMMON COUNTY BOARD: Yes, the hurlers are well treated by the County Board. There is never a shortage of hurleys or gear i.e. jerseys, meals are always provided after games home or away THE LOWER REACHES OF THE NATIONAL HURLING LEAGUE WHERE ROSCOMMON OPERATE, IS NOT UNKNOWN FOR ITS OVER-PHYSICAL STYLE OF PLAY. DO YOU FIND THIS A DISADVANTAGE FOR A YOUNG HURLER LIKE YOURSELF JUST ARRIVING ON THE COUNTY SCENE? No, not really. From my experience I found that most county teams in the lower leagues have young players like myself so I don't find this a disadvantage ROSCOMMON'S PROSPECTS IN 1993. THE FOOTBALLERS WERE PROVINCIAL FAVOURITES IN 1992 AND FLOPPED. CAN THEY REGAIN THE CONNACHT TITLE THIS SUMMER? Dermot Earley has taken over as manger of Roscommon senior football team. He has brought in new faces on the team and testing them out in the league, building up a team for the championship. They are well capable of regaining the Connacht title this year AND THE HURLERS. THAT ALL-IRELAND 'B' TITLE - ROSCOMMON ARE WELL CAPABLE OF STRIKING IT RICH IN THIS 'B' COMPETITION: If the effort is made by the players, Roscommon will win the All-Ireland B Championship and we are well capable of doing it Taken from Hogan Stand magazine 9th April 1993 Vol 3 No 14
