Hynes, Martin 'Atty'

The death took place on July 29th at University College Hospital, Galway, following a short illness, of Mr Martin 'Atty' Hynes, Convent Road, Elphin. Coming to Elphin in 1955, he was well known locally. He was a member of Elphin Fire Brigade and down through the years he was very involved in Elphin Drama Group, playing major roles in different productions. He also played golf and darts.
He was an avid GAA fan, winning three county finals with Elphin in 1955, 1956 and 1957. He played with the county in the early 60s. President of Elphin GAA club for the last decade, he also served as a coach and also in administration. In 1972 he had the honour of refereeing an All-Ireland minor final in Croke Park. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, he will be sadly missed by his wife, Vera (nee Tighe); son, Matthew, Elphin; daughters, Cathriona Arthur, Wexford and Patricia, Thomastown, County Kilkenny; sister-in-law, Mamie McArdle, brothers-in-law, Fr Jim Tighe, CC, Vincent and Desmond Tighe; three grandchildren, nephews, many relatives, community and friends. His remains were removed from Brady's Funeral Home to St Patrick's Church, Elphin. Mass of the Resurrection was con-celebrated by Fr. John Joe Gannon, PP, Fr Jim Tighe, Fr Austin McKeon, Fr Welch and Fr Fallon. Burial took place in the new cemetery.
