Former Fine Gael Councillor widely mourned

Mr Paddy Moore, Riverside Place, Athlone, who died at Portiuncula Hospital Ballinasloe, on Saturday last, July 20th, was a Fine Gael member of Roscommon County Council from 1991 until 1999. A native of Kilkenny, Taughmaconnell, he was a well known community activist in his native parish before taking up residence in Athlone in the mid-seventies.

All his life he was predominantly identified with me farming community and in his work role at the Mid-West Farmers Co-Operative at Monksland he was noted for his tact, courtesy and discretion in dealing with the general public at all times. Of a friendly and caring disposition, he was a most engaging conversationalist whose listening skills and general knowledge made him an ideal friend and confidant. He was predominantly identified with me NFA campaign for farmers rights in me mid-sixties and he also canvassed his native Taughmaconnell for milk suppliers to the creamery in Athlone in the sixties. Locally, he was an activist with the Skyvalley Rovers Soccer Club and served as its President for a time period. His love of sport also saw him involve himself with the Padraig Pearses GAA club at under-age level He was also an active member of the Taughmaconnell Feis Committee for many years and played an active role in the amateur drama movement inTaughmaconnell in his younger days. His initial involvement in politics was with the late Jack McQuillan and he subsequently joined the Fine Gael party. While serving on the Council he also served for a number of years as a member of the River Suck Drainage Board.

Aged 92 on June 28m last, he had been a resident of Tearmainn Bhride in Brideswell since February 2008 alongside his wife Dilly who pre-deceased him on November 18th 2009. It was his lifelong friend Tom Kenny, Kiltoom, the Chairperson of the South Roscommon Fine Gael District Executive in the nineties, who asked him to stand for the County Council. Paying tribute to the deceased on Friday, Mr Kenny said that he knew from all his dealings with him that he would prove a popular candidate and he had proved to be a quietly efficient and effective councillor whose sense of decency shone forth on all occasions. His colleagues on Roscommon County Council and Fine Gael party members formed a guard of honour at the removal in Brideswell on Monday evening. Following concelebrated mass at St Peter and St Paul's church on Tuesday the funeral took place to Taughmaconnell cemetery. The principal celebrant of the Mass was Canon Liam Devine, PP, St Peter's. The other celebrants were Rev. John McManus, newly appointed PP of Ballagh; Rev. Hugh Lee, CG, Curraghboy and Rev. Sean O'Dowd, CC St Peter and St Paul's, Athlone. Pre- deceased by his wife, Dilty (nee Carty, Feade), he is survived by one brother, Frank, Chicago; sisters, Mrs Bridget Kildea, Gatestown, Taughmaconnell and Mrs Patricia O'Donnell, Chicago, nieces, nephews and innumerable other relatives.
