Mulryan, Donal
May 01, 2012The recent death of Mr Donal Mulryan, Castleknock, Dublin (and formerly Williamstown) evoked much sadness among those who knew him. Though it is many years since he lived in the community, his contemporaries have very fond memories of the early years of Donal. In the 1940s and 50s, the main community organisation in rural areas was the GAA Club, and in this, Donal was a giant of a man in every sense. Not alone was he a man of great physique, he was an extremely talented footballer and was a tireless worker and organiser for the club, always having the interests of the young players at heart. When his career path took him to various parts of Ireland and eventually Dublin, he retained his lifelong interest in Gaelic Games, spending much of his free time coaching young players. He never forgot his roots when, in recent years, the history of the club was being written, Donal took a great interest in this. Not alone did he forward a most interesting and informative piece on his time with the club, but he took the trouble to travel from Dublin to be present at the book launch, though he had just recovered from serious illness. How well all enjoyed meeting Donal that night, and how equally thrilled he was to meet up with old colleagues! Though he was extremely happy in his Castleknock home, a small corner of his heart remained in Williamstown. May the soul of this gentle giant rest in peace. Sincere sympathy is extended to his wife Nora, sons Peter and Paul, daughter Niamh, grandchildren, sisters Maeve, Patricia, Greta and Christina, and brother Sean, Williamstown.
