O'Neill, Ken

The death took place at Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe on January 16th of Mr Ken (Kenneth) O'Neill, Summerhill, Athlone.

Aged 73, deceased was a native of London but the family settled in the Athlone environs and Ken was very much part of the local community of south Roscommon for many decades. He worked as a sales representative for New Ireland Assurance and taking in his work stint as District Manager he spent over 50 years with the company and made many lifelong business and personal friendships due to his affability, genuine nature and gifts as a raconteur and conversationalist.. He was a lover of sport and in his younger days he won three county senior championship medals with Athlone.

As well as being an avid supporter of the Clann na Gael club teams, he also played golf at Thomastown and had the distinction of being captain of the Thomastown Golf Society for a period also. Predeceased by his wife Mary (nee Kenny, Clonbulia) in 1978 he is survived by his son, Phelim, Summerhill and daughter, Mrs Sinead Moran, Bealnamullia; two grandchildren, brothers, Dessie, Coosan; Anthony, Oranmore, Co. Galway and Terry, London; sisters Mary, Baylough, Athlone and Bernadette, Dublin; nieces, nephews and a number of other relatives. Following Concelebrated Mass at SS Peter and Paul Athlone, the funeral took place to Drum Cemetery. The celebrants of the Mass were Very Rev Canon Liam Devine; PP, St Peter's Athlone; Rev. Michael McManus, CC, Drum; Very Rev John Cullen, PP, Kiltoom and Cam and Rev. Declan Shannon, CC, Coosan, Athlone.
