The Late John (Gerry) Higgins The death occurred suddenly at The Good Hope Hospital, Birmingham on April 14th of Mr John (Gerry) Higgins, formerly of Cloontrask, Castlerea. Gerry, as he was better known, left Castlerea in the early 1950s before emigrating, he worked in the boiler house at St. Patrick's Hospital, Castlerea. He was a very keen sports man and was an outstanding Gaelic footballer, winning county senior football championship medals with Tarmon in 1944 and 1947. He was a member of the Tarmon senior team beaten in the 1945 county championship final and the Tarmon minor team beaten in the county championship final of 1942. He won a senior west division cup medal with Tarmon in 1945. He also played county junior football championship with Roscommon and played senior inter county at national league level. He also played with the St. Chad's Football Club in Birmingham. He worked for over thirty years in the Jaguar car factory in Coventry. He was held in high esteem by his work mates, neighbours and friends in Great Barr, Birmingham and all who knew him. This was borne out by the large attendance that attended his funeral mass in St. Anne's Catholic on Friday 1st May. After Mass burial took place in Stretly Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Dolly; son Thomas; daughters, Ann and Tricia; daughter-in-law, sons-in-law, grandchildren, brothers, Brian, Cloontrask, Castlerea; Jimmy, Birmingham, sister Bridie Doherty, Boyle, nieces, nephews and a large circle of friends.
