HL3A: Dominant second half sees Rossies secure comfortable 10-point win

February 04, 2019

ALLIANZ HURLING LEAGUE DIVISION 3A

Roscommon 1-21

Monaghan 0-14

Monaghan suffered their second defeat on the trot when Roscommon proved that much more effective in what turned out to be quite an entertaining contest in Dr. Hyde Park on Sunday last. Roscommon dominated the first half but Monaghan put in an improved performance in the second period but ultimately had too much to do.

At the end of a free scoring first half by the home side they had opened a ten points lead, 1-13 to 0-6, Padraig Kelly leading the charge with five points while Cillian Egan got the goal in the 17th minute. Roscommon were six points up before Monaghan got on target through Conor McKenna and they did create some good chnaxes as well as defending well at times but Roscommon's superior stick work and support play always had them in charge.

Monaghan were a transformed team in the second half as Stephen Lambe who was having a first outing in over two years found the range as he converted a series of frees from a range of distances and angles that made for a much more entertaining contest with Roscommon  elying almost exclusively on the accuracy of Cathal Dolan from frees. Monaghan played the final ten minutes with 14 players following the dismissal of Padraic McGahon on a second yellow card.
