Former Roscommon goalkeeper and current St Brigid's selector Shane Curran has condemned the decision to play club championship games in the month of April.

A number of counties including Roscommon have opted to begin their championships during this month following the GAA's decision not to play any inter-county matches over the coming weeks.

However, the fact that clubs will play one or two rounds of championship and then not play again until their county is out of their respective All-Ireland has been heavily criticised.

And Curran told the Westmeath Independent that another issue was the fact that younger players are studying or doing exams during this period.

"It doesn't make any sense to me," said Curran. "We are in a position now where we have students who are in the process of studying or in some instances doing exams and we expect them to travel back to Roscommon for club championship matches, it's ludicrous.

"I think this whole format has to be revised out of respect for the younger lads. There's no appetite for club championship games in the middle of April."

St Brigid's begin the defence of their crown with a clash against a Clann na nGael side eager to dethrone them.
