Monaghan midfielder Darren Hughes says he’s hoping for a return to action in two months’ time after breaking his ankle last weekend.

Hughes was on duty for his native Scotstown against Ballybay when he sustained the injury four days ago and has been ruled out for the Farney men’s Ulster SFC derby meeting with Cavan on May 18th.

Speaking to The Irish News on the setback, the two-time Ulster SFC winner said he’ll be “leaving no stone unturned” in his recovery.

“I’ll miss the Ulster championship but hopefully the boys do the business and I’ll still have some football to play this summer,” he said.

“A broken ankle is going to be two-plus months. That’s the best-case scenario. So I’ll not be writing the year off.”

He added: “It is what it is. Whatever news I get I’ll be leaving no stone unturned to get back within the recommended time-frame. It’s up to the other boys to keep the ship sailing, I suppose.”
