MONAGHAN COUNTY CONVENTION

Judged by the standards of recent years last night’s County convention in Monaghan was a relatively quiet affair due in no small part to the fact that there were only two elections and no motions down for discussion, the first time in living memory and even longer that no motions were submitted.

County chairman Michael McMahon covered all aspects of the year’s activities in his address, with particular reference to County team affairs and the memorable year that Monaghan has enjoyed. He had special words too for the vast army of volunteers who help to keep the Association and its activities running smoothly in the County and had special praise for those who administer a very extensive fixtures programme, the Competitions Control Committee, but expressed reservations regarding the demands made on them by appeals and hearings at various levels, stating that with the way that aspect was developing it would be difficult to recruit people in the future and the people coming in would probably need legal qualifications to deal with how some aspects of the whole disciplinary process were dealt with at various levels.

FINANCE

County treasurer Eileen Keenan produced a very healthy balance sheet to Convention with turnover up some €368,000 on 2017, to a total of over €3.3 turnover in 2018 and showing a working surplus of income over expenditure of almost €60,000 Euro for the year, despite the fact that Monaghan’s share from the national league was down on 2017, and that commercial income was also down, but this was compensated for by income from other bodies and fundraising which showed substantial increases. In a breakdown of the accounts gate receipts were about similar to 2017, while on the expenditure side match expenses showed a small increase while county team expenses had increased by almost 20%.

ELECTIONS

While there were multiple nominations for a number of positions only two elections materialised on the night with Brendan Casey, defeating Marion Donnelly for the position of Assistant Treasurer by 58 votes to 44 and John Connolly and Noel Duffy, securing the two positions on the Ulster Council with Marion Donnelly again losing out.
