Due to the inclement weather conditions prevailing on Saturday this game was rescheduled for Stamullen and was played in ideal conditions, all be with a cross wind which the teams managed well.
It was a closely contested contest with the teams level at half time on a Bhulf Tón 1 06 St Colmcilles 0 09 scoreline and after 52 minutes on a 1 12 apiece tally. Following a red card for a high tackle on Meath player Thomas O Reilly, Tones pressed home their numerical advantage and hit 1 02 without reply in six minutes to carve out a victory and boost their hopes of a place in the knockout stages.
Both teams had periods of ascendancy in this game and following an opening point from Tones’ Saran O Fionnagáin, the seasiders hit five without reply to lead 0 05 to 0 01 after 15 minutes. Tones needed a response and following a Cian Ward point Fiachra ward palmed the ball to the net following good combination from the O Reilly brothers, Thomas driving forward and linking up with Niall whose hand pass across the square set up the goal chance to level the game. Tones added another three points from Fiachra Ward, Stephen Sheppard and Thomas O Reilly. Tones might have pushed further ahead but Stephen Sheppard’s goal effort was saved. ‘Cilles responded well and outscored Tones 0 04 to 0 01 before the interval to leave the teams level at half time.
Cian Ward (free) and Graham Reilly traded points early in the second half before three Caolan Ward frees gave Tones an early advantage. Stephen Sheppard was tormenting the ‘Cilles rearguard and was repeatedly fouled giving Ward these scoring opportunities. However Colmcilles came roaring back into contention with keeper Andrew Beakey landing two long range frees either side of a goal, a deflected shot which deceived the Tones keeper and left Colmcilles ahead 1 12 to 1 11 after 50 minutes. Tones levelled through a brilliant Stephen Sheppard point to leave the game delicately poised with just eight minutes of normal time left. Tones seized the initiative with Caolan Ward landing the resultant free when Thomas O Reilly driving forward and having beaten one man was fouled. The referee adjudged the tackle a red card offence and Colmcilles had to play out the remaining time with 14 men. Cian Ward nudged Tones two ahead with a sublimely struck long range point before the Fiachra Ward decided the contest with his second goal of the match in the dying minutes having being put through by the marauding Niall O Reilly. The teams traded points in added time with Tones Cian Ward closing the scoring with a long-range effort.
This was a closely contested tie with the issue in doubt to the very end and Tones will be happy to have gained their second win of the campaign following the break for inter county competition.
Next up Curraha who will be in buoyant mood following their victory over Simonstown.
