Dunboyne's second team got the better of St Vincent's in a closely contested JFC final at Pairc Tailteann on Saturday evenning.

Dunboyne ........ 2-11 St Vincent's ......1-12 (After extra time)

A strong second-half showing looked set to shade it for St Vincent's before Dunboyne forced extra time with a late Steven Moran free.

Darragh Nolan's goal -  the first score in the additional 20 minutes - proved to be the decisive score as boosted Dunboyne took possession of the Peter McDermott Cup.

Dunboyne had greater experience that St Vincent's, including several players who played at senior level, some with Keegan Cup success.

St Vincent's can look to poor use of possession at times in the final quarter as a reason for their demise.

Leading the way was Steven Moran, who contributed 1-2 following his introduction in the 40th minute. In the scoring stakes Jack Cox chipped in with four points from play.

Nolan's goal gave Dunboyne a lead they took to the finish. St Vincent's trimmed the deficit to the mimimum, through Nigel Hand, with their sole score in the second period of extra time.

It was left to Moran to settle matters with a late point.

Dunboyne had the breeze in the first-half. They posted four unanswered points in the opening 10 minutes with Cox scoring twice. Team captain Barry Comer and Moran also contributing.

Thomas Field erased St Vincent's blank off the board before the opening quarter passed. Ronan Kearns' men improved in the run-up to the break when the board read 0-7 to 0-3.

Despite conceeding the opening score of the second-half, St Vincent's rallied to hit the front by the 43rd minute. Richard O'Sullivan's 35th minute goal was central to this phase.

A Shane O'Brien effort levelled matters in the 38th minute, seconds before Patrick McGill pointed the Ardcath-men in front for the first time.

That lead only lasted minutes as Moran made an impact within minutes of his introduction. Pouncing on an error by Ardcath 'keeper Cathal Tallon he put Dunboyne back in front, 1-8 to 1-7, in the 47th minute.

Undaunted, St Vincent's rallied again retaking the lead through Richard O'Sullivan in stoppage time. It wasn't enough.
