BFL Div 4: Gaels swept aside by Bective

July 18, 2018

Brian Brady is about to gain possession against Moynalty at Simonstown

Bective 3-17  Simonstown 0-11

3rd placed Simonstown played against second placed Bective in this crucial game in the B League Division 4 last night. Simonstown were without the Under 19 players who play against Dunshauglin tonight in the under 19 group b final in Dunganny. The Gaels missed the presence of duo Sean Gough and Aaron O'Connell in midfield. Also the absence of Ronan Higgins, Johnny Hand and Andrew Cordial proved too challenging for the Sky Blues. The lack of these fresh young legs meant Bective's strong intermediate starters flourished with more space in the game.

Bective started the game very quickly with 2 answered points from play. The Gaels responded when Andrew Burlingham made a powerful run from midfield and laid up Keith Brady for a point from distance. The Gaels exchanged scores throughout the first half but a goal from Bective before half time gave them breathing space. Bective found themselves 3 on two and instead of rashly shooting early they hand passed the ball twice with the last handpass being slapped into an empty net. score at half time Simonstown 0-6  Bective 1-8.

The start of the second half spelt the end of the game as a contest. Bective scored 1-3 without reply in the first 5 minutes of the second half. This meant it was a 11 point game with 25 minutes remaining. Bective's second goal was the most disappointing of the night. Burlingham went for a short kick which was read well from the Bective players, there was still plenty to do and the Cannistown men worked it well and finished expertly for their second goal of the match. Shane Kieran's introduction gave the Gaels much needed legs and pace and he registered on the scoresheet in the second half. The Gaels struggled in the second half but they can take some positives from the game - the performance of Daniel Molloy Battigan, Barry Fox, Shane Kieran and Keith Brady will give Barry Flanagan some postives. Big game next Wednesday in Kilberry against arch rivals Navan O'Mahonys in the Junior C championship.
