Meath vs DIT 11/1/17 at 7:30 p.m. Ashbourne
Laois vs Meath 14/1/17 at 7:00 p.m. Stradbally

Not my favorite competition but at least we get an idea of who's on the panel but we're not going to learn much by playing in it.

Does anyone know if the panel is being cut before or after this competition?

After is usually the tradition isn't it? Not much point cutting it until you've seen lads in action.

Can you really have a proper look at 50+ lads in such a short amount of time though?

Well I guess they'll have had challenges etc too. Agreed though, it's not easy. I guess you can't be trialling more than 30 lads once the league comes around, you need to have a fair idea of who you want for good or bad.

Surely Andy will have the tough job of cutting the squad after the O'Byrne cup, will be a lot of dissapointed lads for sure, I'd imagine the cut will be from 50 to 30 if not 60 to 30, wouldn't wish cutting that many players on anyone..

No, but in reality Andy isn't looking at that many as there will be a cohort of players that will already be on his panel.

Yes they have been split into various squad and have been playing games for the past month now. if they cant chop away those that cant cut it after 2-3 months of training/games then we are in the wrong gig.

You may be able to answer a question, is it true that Andy intends to keep approximately 35 players on panel?

Isn't that what most managers do? I don't think too many counties are carrying more than that on a panel once it's been cut.

No idea but as mentioned above I would say he will keep it around that figure as you need at least 30 odd if you want practise games and that

it'll be interesting to see how things go once the U21's are out of their championship and how many of those guys Andy will bring into the senior panel. Theres a case to be made for Dan O'Neill, Brian Conlon, Ronan Jones, The McGovern brothers, Daire Rowe and James Conlon coming into the senior fold so what happens if Andy is still carrying 35 at that stage as he'd need to.

Yeah I totally agree, however lately wasn't it only 34/26 lads ? I may be incorrect on that but if I recall in chronicle micko said dubs could play a v b games but we couldn't, due to injures etc

You make a valid point, now pure speculation on my part here, but id say it'll be the 50 during O'Byrne cup, then probably down to 35 players for league, and then depending on u21s progress what stage they come in at, I presume it would be a case of are you better than what we have? Might not be too many 21s brought in, or of course he could just extend the squad to 40, it doesn't do dubs any harm.

He could always just drop more players off the panel to make way for any U-21s coming on. He could run with a panel of 30-35 during the league, and then make a decision about whether to keep all of them, or whether to drop a few and replace them with U-21s.
I may be completely wrong, but I can't see Andy McEntee being over-sentimental about keeping players on the panel. I would guess that if he feels there is someone better available, he will not be slow to drop a player, even if they have been on the panel for a few months.

I would almost expect completely different lineups over the course of the 3 games. Anyone seen Kevin Ross play?
