Refereeing Appointments

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

There are some referees that need to call it a day and hang up their boots and whistle. They are not able to keep up with play, and end up refereeing from the one spot. How they can make the call is beyond me.

Replying To MillerX:  "I agree and would have him (Joey Curley) in No 3 position but they will all be seriously challenged by the young Smith lad from Dunshaughlin, always has a full team of officials and fully alert ones at that."
Joey Curley has reffed 2 games all year, 1 in March and the other in April so I don't think he should be in the conversation for the best ref in the county.

To be the best ref you would need to be actually active in the role.

If and when he starts taking games again he can possibly be considered for the list, until then he needs to be discounted.

Some of his performances in the past live long in the memory.

After seeing who the two referees are for the Junior and Intermediate finals, it just confirms to me what I already know, its jobs for the boys who are loyal to the county board! How those two were picked as two of the best to do the job is beyond me! Andrew Smith should be referee for the Junior Final, Patrick Coyle for the Intermediate and David Gough for the Senior. I have picked those three on ability as a referee and their professionalism, not on how loyal they were throughout the year, age or if they deserve a crack at it because they haven't done it before.

If your logic was applied there would be even less referees as it would be a closed shop. Whilst i see where you are coming from there has to be a degree of reward for those in the middle.

On the money Analyst! The likes of Martin Dawson is a very nice lad and I'm sure has helped out the CB on numerous occasions throughout the year, but unfortunately I find him a referee that gets easily intimidated by players on the pitch and fans off it. I think he still has a way to go before he is getting adult championship finals and as you said, if there was a degree of reward for being a referee, more people would get into doing it. Especially lads that possibly finish playing the game and if they were offered similar reward to what managers all over the county get, it would be a no-brainer!

look, the best of luck to all the referees this weekend, it is no easy job to be fair, i just would like to see them use their linesmen and umpires more if required and most of all get the big calls right, players, managers etc etc will make mistakes this weekend and so will referees BUT get the big calls correct if it means a second opinion from the other officials, thats all most management and players want .

Interview with David Gough in the Meath Chronicle yesterday and he is non to pleased. He received a call from the county board offering him the Intermediate Final, but he turned it down seeing as he has refereed it on four occasions already, and he felt there is nothing to gain by him doing another one and that he would rather see a younger referee get the job. Instead the county board have given the job to Paul Mooney. Seeing as they were giving him the intermediate final clearly they are not going to give him the senior final this year again, a final he has only done once, a replay between Dunshaughlin and Summerhill, in the ten years he has been a referee. Seeing as he is in the top two referees in Ireland this is a laughable statistic. He is also unhappy on not getting the Senior All Ireland Final and after this latest snup from the county board for the Senior Final he is considering stepping down from refereeing altogether. Backs up the claims that you get the refereeing gigs in Meath based on who you know and how popular you are with the CCC or county board in general.

And as I mentioned earlier the CB didn't even give him that replay, Leinster council insisted on him getting it as they wanted to appoint him to the intercounty panel.
Hopefully he keeps the head and stays refereeing but from what I hear he is likely to pack it in.

Yes I heard that as well forgot to mention it previously. The man is the best referee in Ireland and has refereed All Ireland Semi Finals, Ulster Championship matches and Munster Finals and the fact that his own county haven't given him a Senior Championship final in the ten years he has been refereeing is behind a joke. The county board talk about treating referees with respect and how they don't have enough referees and that they need more young referees etc, yet they treat there own with such disregard.

TBH Id say Coldrick could care less if he got the Senior Final or not , Im not a big fan of his or Goughs as I feel they are too friendly with the Dubs , first name terms, easy frees etc Id say give it to one of the other refs McGivney, McNeilis , Give some of the Junior finals to the new Refs like that smith lad from Dunshaughlin

That's ridiculous. I'd imagine they are on first name terms with nearly all the top flight players not just the Dubs.
Coldrick might not care less as he has done one, it's clearly a good thing to see Gough
having the desire to do one, it means he holds the local scene as important as anything else
