Castletown and Nobber draw

July 07, 2005
This widely anticipated and much talked about intermediate game took place on Tuesday night in Syddan. Castletown 0-8 Nobber 0-8 Though low scoring, it was a very enjoyable and tough encounter with both defences excellent throughout. Nobber started the brightest going two points to no score up the scores coming from Brian Farrell frees. Castletown responded by taking command round the midfield with the trio of Michael Hickey, Brendan Carry, and Liam Clarke dominating the midfield area for the rest of the first half. Both teams adopted a third midfielder which at times clogged up the midfield area with eight players. Castletown hit back with scores from Keith Ginnity and Joey Carry before Farrell scores again from a free. Liam Clarke then levelled the game again with a fine score but parity was short lived with Farrell scoring once again from a free. With the first half coming to an end Castletown hit back with two points from Aidan Young and Keith Ginnity to leave the score five points to four in favour of Castletown. The second half started brilliantly for the men in Green and Gold with Jimmy Finnerty hitting a point after some fine build up play to leave Nobber trailing by two points. After that score Castletown didn't score again till injury time. Nobber began to up the tempo and took control with Gavin Farrelly getting to grips in midfield with some fine fielding. Farrell once again struck a free over to bring them to within one point. It tool Nobber till near fifty minutes to get their first score from play when Gordon Weldon scored. With the game now level for the fourth time Nobber looked to be the better side but proceeded to kick a procession of wides. But an Alan Farrell point followed by one from Jackie Maguire left Castletown trailing eight points to six with full time approaching. The introduction of Alan Smyth seemed to bring the Castletown men back to life and he quickly got into the action and picked a point to bring the teams to within a point of each other. With the clock ticking down the subsequent kick out was caught by Noel Farrelly at centre back and played out the wing to Beany Gargan who was only on the field two minutes when he was fouled near the sideline about forty yards out. Liam Clarke took the following free from a tight angle to bring the game level for the fifth and final time. Best for Castletown Were Aidan Young, Liam Clarke and Keith Ginnity. Castletown - J.
