JCFC: Kavanagh to the rescue

July 24, 2017

St Ultans bow out of the U21FC C at the quarter-final stage.

St Ultans 2-11 Trim 1-14

Eoin Kavanagh scored the equalising point for St Ultans, late on - for the third time this season - against Trim in Kildalkey on Friday evening.

The men in green and black got off to a good start in this junior c championship game when Tommy Fitzsimons scored the opening point after two minutes. Starting his first game of the year Ciaran Rogers opened his account with St Ultans second point.

Trim started slowly but once they got up and running they scored five points, all from play, without reply. Darren Kavanagh stopped the rot for St Ultans by scoring his first after 16 minutes.

Trim spurned two glorious goal chances soon after, which might have killed the game off. However, Darren Kavanagh was proving a pain in the Trim defence's side when he popped up again and scored two more points to keep Ultans in the match. His brother Eoin got in on the act as well drawing the game six points each after 23 minutes. Trim came back again and scored their seventh point from play.

Barry Brady then scored the only goal off the half. A good run from Darren Kavanagh allowed Eoin Kavanagh and substitute Shane Rennicks play a smart one-two with each other, putting Brady into space in front of the goal. He fired home from close range putting St Ultans two points clear.

Corner-forward Derek O'Brien added a point just before half-time that left the score at half-time 1-07 to 0-07 in favour of the Ultans.

St Ultans started the second half quickly and it was Tommy Fitzsimons who scored his side's second goal after just 3 minutes of the second half.

It was at this stage Trim started to dominate. They kicked two more points and only for a great save from Alan Ball in the Ultans goal they would have cut the deficit even more. Darren and Eoin Kavanagh added to their tally to keep the Ultans' noses in front.

Trim were pilling on the pressure. They weren't getting the goal didn't needed though, mainly because of some great defending and a super double block from Paddy McLoughlin and Alan Ball in goals, again.

Barry Brady got his first point of the game after 53 minutes but that triggered Trim's scoring run. They went a point up after scoring 1-03 in the final ten minutes of the game. It looked like the Ultans would be walking away empty handed until Eoin Kavanagh stepped up, deep into injury time, and from a free scored the equalising point.

St Ultans play Rathkenny on the 31st of August in a most win game in b-league division 3.
