JDFC: Drumbaragh prove too much for Bective

July 22, 2017

Drumbaragh 0-16, Bective 2-6.

Bective came up 4 points short in this exciting Jnr D championship match in Carlanstown in good conditions on Friday night.  Drumbaragh  started best with a number of fine points on the board before Bective's James Davis split their defence with a 40 meter run and slotted home a great goal.  Unfortunately this was followed by a number of wides but Bective proved they could work the ball well with fast attacking runs from Neil Dowdall, Mark Walsh, Donagh Garvey and David Fitzpatrick, and they added 3 points before half time.  Bective lost Conal Shaw to injury and his replacement Pauric Mc Connell contributed well with wining a number of midfield "breaks" and covering the length of the pitch.  Craig Roche returning (previous night) from his world tour takes up the centre back position. Drumbaragh scored 8 points, with some from long range aided by a stiff breeze, and went into the break with a 2 point lead.

Bective started the second half with a determination to win this game and, led by fine fielding at centrefield by an in-form John Moran, dominated the exchanges.  It was Drumbaragh's turn to kick wides but they kept increasing their tally with a number of points.  Ten minutes into this half Bective won a penalty and it was coolly slotted home by Michael Lyness.  Michael added a fine point from outside the 45 meter line and Bective went ahead by 1 point.  Bective continued their attacking threat but "wrong options" and good blocking from the Drumbaragh backs foiled some goal opportunities and resulted in only a further 2 points scored for the half.  Bective now had a number of harsh decisions given against them and Drumbaragh were awarded a dubious penalty much to the annoyance of the Bective management and supporters.  Bective's Ray Cahill dives low, saves, and holds possession but instead of winning a free out was sent off for retaliating in the goal mouth "pile up".   At this stage Greg Hogge dons the goalie jersey and Ciaran Casey joins the attack.  A further couple of frees and some good points from open play scored by Drumbaragh put this game beyond reach for this gallant Bective side and probably results in failure to qualify for the knock-out stages.

Team sheet:   Ray Cahill, Brian Hogge, Colm Barry, Greg Hogge, Mark Walsh, Conal Shaw, David Fitzpatrick, John Moran, Donagh Garvey, Michael Lyness, James Davis, Neil Dowdall, Shane Barry, Richie Nevin, Craig Roche. Subs: Diarmuid Collins, Darren Coffee.
