July 22, 2017

Rathkenny's Donal Keogan with Conor Carey Donaghmore Ashbourne

Rathkenny 0-13 Duleek Bellewstown 1-06

Rathkenny claimed 2 important points after a strong second half performance in Simonstown on Friday night.

Rathkenny played with a strong wind at their backs in the first half, but failed to take full advantage of this when only registering 5 scores in the opening 30 minutes.

Donal Keogan opened Rathkenny's account after 3 minutes with a well taken point from out on the right. James Macken added another a minute later to leave Rathkenny two up.  Duleek added a point on 11 minutes before Caoloch Halligan opened his account for the evening with a well taken point. The rest of the half was a tense affair with boths sides struggling to convert chances. Duleek managed to convert a goal and point before the end of the half and Rathkenny added two further points, an excellent point from Barney Lenihan and one from Jack Gore.

Rathkenny got off to the perfect start against  the wind in the second half. After the throw in, Keith Timmons found himself on the end of a good pass over the top and punched the ball over the bar to put Rathkenny one up. One minute later, Niall Branigan gave a similiar ball to Jack Gore who was able to convert and give Rathkenny some breathing space. Brian Meade and James Macken were dominating the middle of the park at this stage and Caoloch Halligan added his second point from a free after 5 minutes and not soon after Rathkenny were awarded a penalty which Gore failed to convert. Rathkenny pushed on after this however,  with Caoloch Halligan adding points on 12, 13 minutes, followed by brilliant point on 16 minutes. Duleek managed a few more scores in the second half but Rathkenny were excellent in defence and finished strongly with points from Gore and Halligan.
