IFC: Syddan fortunate to come away with the win

SYDDAN 1-8 CORTOWN 0-7

SYDDAN eked out their first win of the IFC campaign when overcoming wasteful Cortown at Moynalty on Sunday evening.

It was a must-win game for Syddan but they can consider themselves fortunate to come away with both points after Cortown hit 12 second half wides.

Cortown were also unfortunate to see a goal effort rebound off the inside of the Syddan post and eventually go wide in the closing minutes.

Playing with the advantage of the strong breeze in the opening half Daire Rowe (free) and Gary Farrelly had early points to set Syddan on their way. However Cortown hit back and points from Ryan O'Rourke and David Rispin had the sides level after seven minutes.

Cortown didn't score again for the remainder of the half and Syddan never relinquished the lead once Ian Curran pointed them ahead on 10 minutes.

Two further Daire Rowe points left it 0-5 to 0-2 and the lead stretched further after Gary Farrelly first-timed a loose ball to the net. Syddan eventually led 1-6 to 0-2 at the break.

A Sean Clare point tightened Syddan's grip on proceedings within a minute of the restart. However Daire Rowe's 40th minute point was their only other score of the half.

Cortown dominated after that but their finishing let them down and Syddan held on for a somewhat fortuitous victory.
