Moments earlier a speculative Shane Glynn effort wound up in the Dunshaughlin net. It tied the scores for the only time in the second period.

In contrast, the teams were level five times in first-half. Playing towards the town end, Dunshaughlin upped matters in the third quarter moving three points clear by the 35th minute.

Thereafter attempts by Wolfe Tones to trim the deficit were met with a positive Dunshaughlin response that saw them go five points clear, 0-14 to 0-9, midway through the half.

Had Wolfe Tones availed of half of the goal chances that came their way, they could have settled the outcome long before the end.

A fine block by team captain Caoimhin King on Fiachra Ward's 55th minute goal attempt epitomised Dunshaughlin's diligence.

Given their diligent defending, Dunshaughlin were a tad unfortunate to concede a goal, but responded positively to leaking it.

Even though we only had to wait a shade over 15 seconds for the first score, a Fiachra Ward point at the town end,  the early stages of this round two fixture were pedestrian.

Cian Ward (free) doubled the 'Tones lead six minutes in before the pendulum swung Dunshaughlin's way.

Dunshaughlin upped the ante with four points in seven minutes with the pick of them being Niall Murphy's 13th minute effort that gave them the lead for the first time.

Early in the second quarter Dunshaughlin moved 0-5 to 0-3 clear with two scores in quick succession from Shane Gallogly.

The scores were tied five times in the opening half with Dunshaughlin leading by the minimum twice in the second quarter.

A fine Ray Maloney effort restored Dunshaughlin's lead. Fiachra Ward closed the first-half scoring to leave it 0-7-each at the break.

Within two minutes of resumption, Dunshaughlin regained the lead and were never headed subsequently as they consigned Wolfe Tones (who drew with Simonstown first time out) to their first defeat of the campaign.

It was a first SFC outing in four months for both sides. Next up for Dunshaughlin is a clash with Moynalvey at Skryne on Saturday, August 13. Wolfe Tones face Na Fianna at Pairc Tailteann a day later.
